Accident occurred Sunday, March 17, 1985 in LAWTON, OK
Aircraft: DOUGLAS A-26B, registration: N142ER
Injuries: 3 Minor.

AN INTERMITTANT FIRE IN THE LEFT ENGINE ACCESSORY SECTION LED TO LOSS OF FUEL TO THE ENGINE. THE RIGHT ENGINE INJESTED WATER AND QUIT. THE LANDING GEAR HAD BEEN LEFT PINNED IN THE DOWN POSITION BECAUSE OF A MALFUNCTION REPORTED ON THE PREVIOUS FLIGHT. NEITHER PROPELLER WAS FEATHERED, BUT THE RESULTING HIGH RATE OF DESCENT LED TO A FORCED LANDING BEFORE THE LEFT TANK BLEW UP AND THE WING BURNED OFF. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE AFTER ALL THREE OCCUPANTS ESCAPED WITHOUT SERIOUS INJURY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS BEING FERRIED TO ANOTHER FACILITY FOR RESTORATION.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:

Evidently, Counselman and Murray had purchased the plane surplus and were flying it to an air show "in Taos". They encountered a violent storm in the Baldy area that disabled their navigation equipment. Knowing that they needed power to clear Baldy, they put the throttles ahead full. Unfortunately, the plane was not level at the time, and instead was nose down. Accordingly they essentially did a full-power dive into the side of French Henry.

Injuries: 2 Fatal.

THE PLT RCVD A WX BRIEFING BEFORE TAKEOFF, BUT DID NOT FILE A FLT PLAN. DRG THE FLT, THE ACFT (DOUGLAS A-26C, N4813E) CRASHED IN MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN AT AN ELEV OF ABOUT 11,200' NEAR BALDY MOUNTAIN. SCOUTING PERSONNEL, WHO WERE CAMPED IN THE VICINITY, RPRTD THE WX WAS POOR WITH A LOW CEILING, RESTRICTED VISIBILITY, RAIN & HAIL. AN EXAM OF THE CRASH SITE REVEALED THE ACFT IMPACTED IN A STEEP, RIGHT WING LOW, NOSE LOW ATTITUDE. MUCH OF THE WRECKAGE COLLAPSED INTO THE IMPACT CRATER. THE DEGREE OF DESTRUCTION WAS CONSISTENT WITH A HIGH SPEED IMPACT. CHORDWISE SCRATCH MARKS WERE FOUND ON THE PROP BLADES. SEVERAL TREE BRANCHES & LIMBS AT THE CRASH SITE HAD SMOOTH CUTS. THE PLT WAS TYPE RATED IN THE A-26, BUT HIS CERTIFICATE HAD A LIMITATION THAT RESTRICTED HIM TO FLYING IT IN 'VFR ONLY.' NEITHER THE PLT NOR THE RATED PASSENGER HELD AN INSTRUMENT RATING. THE RATED PASSENGER DID NOT HAVE A TYPE RATING IN THE A-26, BUT THE PLT POSSESSED A WAIVER TO FLY N4813E AS A SINGLE PLT AIRPLANE.

The plane was uniquely fitted with a rear opening cargo ramp

Possibly the ugliest of all Invader conversions, the Rhodes Berry Silver 60 was built at Whiteman Airpark in the San Fernando Valley of southern California during the late 1950s. The fuselage was completely re-designed resulting in a swollen unit that could accommodate up to 16 passengers. Because of the deeper fuselage, the nose gear could now retract straight back without first swiveling as on stock Invaders. The first and probably the only Silver 60 flew on 25 June 1960.

It is thought another example was built but information relating to this aircraft cannot be found.

You have 44-35950 the only Aero Trades conversion being converted to Garrett Turbo props at some late date.
 
My father was a corporate pilot flying out of Bridgeport Airport in the early 1950’s.  I believe Joe Whitney may have been
at my fifth birthday on Oct 1, 1955.
 
On Oct 3, 1955 44-35950 blew up in flight with Joe Whitney at the controls.  Joe had left GLC to pursue a new career in architecture.
He had designed his own house as part of that.  Another pilot was on vacation and they asked Joe if he could come back and fill in. 
Sadly he did.

A T-37 AND AN A-26 COLLIDED IN FLIGHT AT 9500 FEET MSL WHILE PRACTICING AN ACROBATIC MANEUVER. THE MANEUVER REQUIRED THE T-37 TO PASS UNDER THE RIGHT WING OF THE A-26, AND TERMINATE THE MANEUVER WITH A ROLL. ACCORDING TO THE A-26 PILOT, THE FIRST FLY-BY WAS COMPLETED OUTBOARD THE RIGHT WING WITHOUT INCIDENT. BUT, ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT, THE A-26 PILOT NOTICED THAT THE RUDDER AND A PORTION OF THE RIGHT RUDDER AND HORIZONTAL STABILATOR WERE MISSING AS THE AIRPLANE EMERGED FROM BENEATH THE RIGHT WING. EXAMINATION OF THE A-26 AND RECOVERED COMPONENTS INDICATED CRUSH AND IMPACT DAMAGE FROM CONTACT WITH THE RIGHT PROPELLER OF THE A26. THE A-37 CRASHED AND BURNED.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:

THE AIRPLANE'S RIGHT ENGINE LOST POWER SHORTLY AFTER LIFT-OFF. THE PILOT SAID HE ATTEMPTED TO FEATHER THE RIGHT ENGINE PROPELLER, BUT THE PROPELLER WOULD NOT FEATHER. HE WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALTITUDE, AND THE AIRPLANE CRASHED JUST OFF THE RUNWAY. POSTACCIDENT EXAMINATION OF THE RIGHT ENGINE DISCLOSED A FRACTURED/PARTIALLY DISINTEGRATED PISTON IN THE NUMBER TEN CYLINDER. THE RIGHT ENGINE'S PROPELLER FEATHERING SYSTEM WAS ALSO INOPERATIVE.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:

the failure of the piston assembly in the number ten cylinder of the right engine. A factor associated with the accident was the inoperative propeller feathering system for the right engine.
