The Air research and development Command in collaboration with the Wright Air Development Centre, developed the system for taking photographs at night.
The Hell roarer was contained within a 12 ft Torpedo like cylinder and was attached to the wing and It was controlled by the pilot.
it got its name from the roar it gave off as it burned atomised or finely pulverised magnesium powder.
It gave of the equivalent light to 10,000,000 candles and is valid on execution for four minutes.
The "Torpedo could be jettisoned if temperature reading in the cockpit reached danger levels.
During the initial tests, it was reported by numerous obserers and locals as a flying saucer.
The system was used in Iwo Jima around the 1950 and 60's
