With a plentiful supply of surplus aircraft available
at the end of the war, Gate Guardians were a familiar site at service airfields around the UK and overseas.
Guardians placed on "poles" were meant to represent the
machine in flight and sometimes it worked.
As these aircraft were mainly actual airframes rather than replica
models, the gate guardians were soon being replaced by copies so that the actual airframes that had provenance, could
be sent for restoration either to static condition in museums or to flight.
